MUZN: How do you approach songwriting and What influences you? Do you have a
visual image in your mind as the song is composed, or does that come afterwards as a result of the song?
This is an interesting question to start off with! As far as visual images go, I suppose it's more a case of music having or reflecting particular atmospheres ... but I don't know how much that is part of the writing process itself. I suppose it's a cliché, but it's true that we have written most of our uptempo, upbeat songs during the day, on those sunny blue-sky days of spring and summer - while the sad and emotional ballads tend to have come through late at night, in those more reflective moments ... there's nothing like heartbreak to get the creativity going!
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: What's your philosophy on music today?
Well, I suppose I would like to make music that is light, pretty and natural ... that has something positive in there for people, something that is beautiful even in a sad song, something that can touch people, and something that lasts.
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: Tell us about you, when did you begin writing songs ?
I guess I came into music seriously quite late, although I'd always sung for pleasure and enjoyed performing! I had written a few songs when I was younger, but while I was at college studying drama I joined a band, and something really clicked - from that point on I knew I really wanted to sing and keep singing, to write songs and make music.
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: How many projects are you currently involved in?
This is my number one project, and this project is me, working with Chris and making our music. The response to our songs has been so amazing, we never expected the kind of positive reactions and support we have been getting since we came online! Getting our songs remixed by European and US producers who we met via internet has been a really interesting experience too, there is lots of talent out there!
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
What's your long-term goals?
I would really like to keep making music and to develop as an artist, and of course to break into the business! It makes a difference to have a record company behind you in terms of production, distribution and marketing, and although of course there are lots of things about the music industry that aren't perfect, it's where we want to be.
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
How did you get into music?
Chris is always amazed by the fact that I don't have a particularly musical family background, apart from mum listening to music of course. He grew up in an artistic family and started learning piano before he could walk, but although I always liked singing I never really
thought about getting "into music" bigtime until I joined the band at college. We did some gigs, I wrote a few songs for them, and we recorded a CD, and that really showed me how much I liked all aspects of making music and wanted to keep doing it.
And after that, I think the real beginning was when I made the big decision to leave work and go to Vocal tech to study singing. I just had to find out what it was about, that thing inside me that needed to be explored. It was a sacrifice in some ways, but definitely worth it - and that's how I met Chris and started on our project too!
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
How long have you been performing?
Well, in one way or another I've been performing as long as I can remember! I always liked being on stage and whenever I see people in concert I always dream about getting up on stage with them – or sometimes instead of them!!
In fact after seeing Norah Jones live recently I actually had a very strange dream, where I was on stage performing and then someone came up and starting reading poems at the same time, which didn't exactly work ... I hope that wasn't a premonition, or at least that no music
industry people are there if that ever happens for real ...
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
What other artists do you admire? And what bands\artists inspired you the
most early on?
Well, mum used to listen to Barbra Streisand and people like that, and I remember really enjoying it when I performed "Annie" at school ... but my favourite artists are probably Sadé, Eva Cassidy and more recently Norah Jones. And one song I really like that always seems to surprise people is "The Crystal Ship" by the Doors ... Chris and I are going try and find a way of covering it one day!
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
What do you want out of life?
Deep questions here!! I guess I'm still figuring some of that out ... what AM I going to do when I grow up?
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN:
What is the most important lesson you think you have learned so far?
Well, often you learn lessons by your mistakes, so I'm going to be careful what I say here! In music I suppose the big thing is the difference between the myths and the reality ... but that's part of life too, and growing up. I still feel as though I'm quite new to this in some ways - Chris is the old one here, I think he's learned a LOT of lessons!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: Where do you want to be in the future?
"The future? Happy, healthy, and still making music."
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: How many of your songs are 'instant' songs and how many are channelled?
For us, the writing process can work in lots of different ways. Sometimes, it's just being carried on a vibe ... when that happens the whole of the song seems to form as you work on it, and it doesn't take very long at all. At other times, it's like climbing a mountain - you
might have something to hold onto, perhaps a chorus or part of a melody, but it takes a lot of effort to make progress!
We never really say "let's write an alternative rock song" or "let's do another piano ballad", the process is always more natural and unpredictable - Chris may have some ideas that I like and we work on, or I'll bring something, or we'll re-hash some old songs/ideas, or we'll jam, sometimes one of us will come up with an almost complete song. And after working together for a while we have so many ideas and songs floating around our heads or in pre-production, in almost every style you could think of - okay, every style except heavy metal, gothic and
techno :))

MUZN:
Tell us about your latest project?
I can tell you the latest news in our project ... we have live performances coming up in London, first of all on June 27th at Acoustic Trip, then August 4th at The Bedford (which will be webcast, so everyone can see it!!) - do check the official website - www.soundclick.com/laura - for all the details.
We also have a fantastic and very "different" remix just out, a dance version of “Still In Love” by DJ Cobra – we really like it, and you can hear it on our Soundclick site too!
What else can I plug ... um, did I mention the website? :)) www.soundclick.com/laura
-------------------------------------------------------------
MUZN: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Well, we would both like to pay tribute to the many fantastic musicians we have met online. There are a truly impressive array of talented artists across many musical directions in the indie scene, and it has been really inspiring and enjoyable to hear their music and to meet
them within the online musical community, at places like Indiehangout, Funender, Artistlaunch, Soundclick and here. There are too many to name and I'd be afraid of missing someone out, but would highly recommend that people interested in quality music from all genres check out the links (in our News box) on our Soundclick page.
In addition to being great artists, these people are also wonderfully generous and open-minded supporters of indie musicians, and we truly thank and respect them all for the kindness and encouragement they show to us and so many others. And of course we thank Muziquenet for supporting quality music and musicians, and for giving us a chance to speak.
