IB: How do you approach songwriting and What influences you? Do you have a
visual image in your mind as the song is composed, or does that come afterwards as a result of the song?
I wish I could say I had a formula for songwriting but I don’t. Sometimes I decide what it is I want to say first, pitch concepts with my writing partner and we usually feed off each other from there, it could But then there are times when I am just inspired by something going on in life around me or by some music in my head it
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: What's your philosophy on music today?
My philosophy on music period is, do what feels good to you. I don’t like every song that comes on the radio but somebody out there loves it. Whenever I perform a song it is because it is what feels good and true to me a that moment. Every song doesn’t have to be a deep thought, but every song should be heartfelt.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: Tell us about you, when did you begin writing songs ?
I think it was sometime in my teens. I was a quiet nerdy kid and I just needed a way to express the things I was going through at the time.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: How many projects are you currently involved in?
Currently I am working on a new album. That is my main focus right now. I am also one of the founders of Homegrown Collective (a NYC musicians collective) keeping that moving and growing is a lot of hard work.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB:
What's your long-term goals?
My long term goal is to be able to have not just a singing career but also a business, recording, songwriting, events, I will eventually establish a company that encompasses several facets of the music industry.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB:
How did you get into music/songwriting?
I was fortunate to have wonderful teachers; they saw something in me that at the time I didn’t see in myself. They encouraged my growth in music and helped me develop my talents and I am eternally grateful to them.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB:
How long have you been performing?
I started performing at the age of 8, playing piano and singing.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB:
What other artists/songwriters do you admire? And inspired
you the most early on?
Billie Holliday and Carmen McCrae were the first female artists I really sat down and listened to my father had these two records “Red Carmen” and Lady Sings the Blues” I put them on one day and it just blew my mind. Then I started getting into Aretha, Sam and Dave, James Brown I was an old soul as a child.. But I also grew up with hip-hop, Queen Latifah, Big Daddy Kane, Tribe Called Quest, and then came Mary J Blige! I thought I was in heaven! D’Angelo (please come back), Faith they all inspire me
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: What do you want out of life?
I have what I want in life already. I have GOD, I have my health, people who love me whom I can love in return, a home and the ability to express myself through music, If I could have more I would say a child and a higher level of success in music.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB:
What is the most important lesson you think you have learned so far?
I would say it’s to invest in yourself and your career. Success I have begun to see isn’t based necessarily on talent but on how much work you put in. also persistence pays off.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: Where do you want to be in the future?
You that a funny question cause’ I have my list of goals and my focus and everything, but I am happy with the way my life is going right now. so I try not to worry about a timeline for reaching my goals.
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: How many of your songs are 'instant' songs and how many are
channelled?
Most of my songs are “channeled” I’ve just finished writing a song I started three years ago! I love when a song just comes to me, those give such a rush, a high, like I just touched something truly magical
-------------------------------------------------------------
IB: Tell us about your latest project?
My latest project is my new album. It doesn’t have a name yet but It has been a long time coming, it is a culmination of my life experiences over the past few years. I’m so excited to be able to share the new things going on in my life with more people. I begin recording in April but I haven’t a strict time line for completion. I am also participating in a documentary about musicians in NYC, it will be strange having cameras following me around butting into my life but hey that’s what I’m signing up for filming also begins in April.
