Songwriting - Some elements of a really good song include lyrics with a universal appeal, a melody that touches the heart and one that stays with you... There are lyrical styles in addition to musical styles, so there is a certain way you would write for different artists. Approach songwriting with a certain level of professionalism, and it all becomes part of the discovery. As a songwriter, it is for your best interest to obtain representation; you should (if it is possible) have a lawyer. It is the same as going into any other business venture, you need capitol. Most songwriters believe it's easy to write and create a song and it's free, this is true to some degree. However, the odds are more in your favor if you have created a demo of your work and you really should hire an attorney. It is an investment and a business.

Establishing yourself as a songwriter - Some songwriters start out as performers, however, this is not always an option for some. It's fairly important to create a good demo, the better you can make your demo sound, it will be more simplified to obtain the attention of others. Then try to contact publishers and locate someone that believes in your music. It is, for the most part, most likely best to contact the publishers rather than the artists themselves. Artists generally do not want to have material submitted to them and it is really not very secure for them to listen to someone else's material. Lets say for some reason an artist accepts someone's demo/tape and 4-5 years later they happen to write a song with the same chords or melody, how would they be able to prove that it was just a coincidence?

What form are songwriters paid?...Unless they are writing for a film, a songwriter never receives money upfront. They always receive money from the sale of the record, and there is a statutory rate on how much (currently, six and a quarter cents) if they own the whole song. Then, if they have a co-writer, they would split the money. Or three writers, then it would be split three ways.
